About us

The Save Our UQ Community opposes the University of Queensland's latest redevelopment proposal for the UQ Union Complex, which was completed in 1961.

We are a growing number of students, academics, business operators, and members of the Brisbane community. We believe any redevelopment of the Union Complex should not proceed without further consultation with the broader Brisbane community, which had already expressed its concerns during the Save the UQ Union Complex Campaign 2019. We are opposed to the University of Queensland's current arrangement to decant the UQ Union and many local businesses, which will disrupt our community for the next three years during the redevelopment.

We will be campaigning for the University of Queensland to:

  • open the redevelopment consultation process to the wider Brisbane community before moving forward

  • stop the proposed demolition of the relaxation block building (21D) built-in 1961.

  • restore the Union Complex building with proper maintenance and repairs rather than proposing aesthetic redevelopment plans that disrupt our community.

Our Concerns:

  • The proposed redevelopment is set to cause significant disruption and displacement for the UQ Union and a large portion of the UQ Community throughout the campus over three years.

  • The latest redeveloped complex plans incorporate the essential amenities needed to continue operating the Red Room Bar and facilities vital for welfare programs like Kampus Kitchen.

  • Local businesses have been largely excluded from the consultation process, and the redevelopment threatens the livelihoods of many workers, with dozens of jobs at risk during construction and no assurance of their return once the project is completed.

  • Despite widespread public outcry in 2019, the University of Queensland has opted to sidestep a comprehensive consultation with community stakeholders for this current redevelopment proposal.
